I don’t know about you, but I’m still reveling at how good the sun feels every time I’m sitting out enjoying the warm rays and wondering why in the world I don’t have a better pair of sunglasses. You’d think I’d be better prepared since we live lakeside, but you’d be amazed at my willingness not to protect my eyesight.
Out here on the Oregon coast, things have stayed pretty cool. It’s a balmy 60 degrees on a regular day and gets up to about 68 on some days. Anytime we have to head inland, it’s hot and uncomfortable and all I do is worry that my dogs are roasting in the car (they are) the whole time. Inevitably, I’m rushing back so no one reports me for animal abuse, but mostly because I don’t like to sweat.
Yeah…the coast has spoiled me. I know.
This week, we’re going to catch some crawdads at the river in Mapleton. If you’ve never done it, you should definitely try it out! Over the years, we’ve become pros. All you really need is a ziplock bag to store your crawdads and a towel for your wet butt on the drive back.
Pro Tip: bring a gardening glove to avoid getting pinched. And butterfly nets double as crawdad catchers.
If getting in the water or crawling around rocks isn’t your thing, here are some other things happening in the area for Father’s Day weekend.
June 15-18 - Oregon Divisional Chainsaw Carving Festival
This is a Father’s Day event specialty! Works of transformative art are carved out of plain logs, creating delightful figures like mushrooms and frogs to sculptures of mermaids and more. Whatever the artist imagines, they carve!
Items are auctioned off in the evenings at 5:30PM and gates open each morning at 8AM. Admission is only $5 per day or $15 for a 4-day pass. Don’t miss the 23rd Annual Oregon Chainsaw Carving competition. It’s a must see!
The event address is 313 Rainbow Plaza in Reedsport Oregon
June 17-18 - Reedsport Rock and Gem Show
Around the corner from the chainsaw competition is Reedsport and Winchester’s annual gem and mineral show hosted by the Lower Umpqua Gem and Lapidary Society.
Featuring 8 national dealers and 25 showcases, the show will also have demonstrations on how to make jewelry and kid-friendly activities including a ball toss.
Admission is free to the public and the event is hosted at the Reedsport Community Center located at 451 Winchester Avenue.
June 17-18 - Waldport Festival Beachcomber Days
Waldport, located 33 miles from Florence, is hosting their 67th Beachcomber Days during Father’s Day weekend. This special event features a little bit of everything from a car show to a parade and live music throughout the day.
Grab a bite to eat at the Food Court and browse the vendor’s fair. Family-friendly activities also include a kid’s fair on the 17th or Family Games on the 18th. Check the schedule before heading over to make sure you don’t miss anything!
Well everyone, that’s what we have going for Father’s Day Weekend! If you haven’t made plans for 4th of July weekend yet, we still have 1 opening and we’ll be lighting off a mini fireworks show when the sun goes down.
Don’t forget, our pontoon boat is still available for rent so come on out and enjoy the lake!
If you book your stay before June 24, you'll receive $169 off your 3-night minimum stay. You can book for any time in the future, so do it before the promo ends. Just apply the discount under "discounts and promotions" at check out. Thanks and Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!
